Microsoft released cumulative update KB5083728 for Windows 11 version 25H2, intended for Insiders on the Beta Channel. How to download and install KB5083728 (25H2) Build 26220.8271.
- Location settings. Microsoft clarified the logic of location settings in Settings > Privacy & security > Location. When Location services are turned off, the Default location and Allow location override settings are now displayed as inactive (dimmed) and unavailable — apps and services will not receive location data until Location services are enabled.
- Navigation to installed apps. Improved reliability of navigation to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Icons in the File Explorer search box. Updated the placement of icons in the File Explorer search box, now displayed consistently across different PCs.
- General reliability of File Explorer. Improved overall reliability of File Explorer.
- Navigation pane for Voice Access. Improved work with the navigation pane for Voice Access users.
- Windows Hello Fingerprint. Improved reliability and performance of Windows Hello Fingerprint sign-in after the PC wakes from sleep mode.
- Clipboard history. Improved speed of opening clipboard history.
- Leelawadee UI font family. Updated the Leelawadee UI font family for Thai, Lao, Khmer languages and the Lontara script. Improved glyph sequencing, positioning, and rendering.
Installing update KB5083728 (25H2) Build 26220.8271 is done through Windows Update: go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A system restart is required to complete the installation.
Many features in the Beta Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology. Initially, they become available to a limited number of Insiders, then their distribution gradually expands based on feedback and stability analysis.
Features and capabilities included in Beta Channel builds may change during testing, be removed, or never make it to the final release. Microsoft uses this channel to test finished concepts and gather feedback. Some of these features may appear in future versions of Windows when fully completed.
How the new features work:
Location settings: When global Location services are disabled, the GPS sensor driver and IDeviceLocation API block bus access. The system dims "Default location" and "Allow location override" by linking to a registry flag at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CapabilityAccessManager. Apps receive error ERROR_ACCESS_DISABLED_BY_POLICY.
Navigation to installed apps: Improved URI resolution for ms-settings:appsfeatures via DWM and updated ApplicationFrameHost. Sorting and filtering now call the PackageManager API directly, preventing freezes caused by slow icon rendering in ListView.
Icons in the File Explorer search box: File Explorer adopted XAML Islands with forced fixed width of the search field using the SearchBox control. Icons render from Segoe MDL2 Assets with explicit HorizontalAlignment, eliminating misplacement across DPI scales.
General reliability of File Explorer: The message pump loop in explorer.exe (function CTaskDialog::MessagePump) was reworked. Handle leaks in Shell32.dll when mounting network drives and delayed crashes in the IShellBrowser COM object were fixed. Automatic ribbon panel restart occurs during long I/O operations.
Navigation pane for Voice Access: Voice Access now correctly sends focus commands to TreeViewItem elements in Explorer's left pane via UIA. Target AutomationId recognition is fixed — "click on …" commands bind to LegacyIAccessible.State, preventing folder icon misses.
Windows Hello Fingerprint: Fixed the WudfHost.exe driver for fingerprint sensors. After wake from sleep (S3/Modern Standby), the Windows Hello kernel service reinitializes the WinBio pipeline without unloading the driver, eliminating timeouts and error 0x8009002D.
Clipboard history: Accelerated the Cloud Clipboard Provider (UserDataService). Instead of synchronous registry hive polling on Win + V, a Memory Mapped File handles buffers up to 4 MB, and OneDrive sync runs in a Below Normal background thread.
Leelawadee UI font family: Updated DirectWrite engine (DWrite.dll) for complex scripts. Thai, Lao, Khmer, and Lontara glyphs dispatch via OpenType features (ccmp, abvm). Positioning and rendering use IDWriteFontFace::GetGlyphRunOutline with baseline and kerning adjustments.
