Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5083824 (Build 28020.1803) for Windows 11, version 26H1. This update is available for Insiders on the Canary Channel and represents a build belonging to the br_release development branch. Users on this channel will now receive updates for Windows 11, version 26H1 (Build 28020), which is activated on top of Windows 11, version 26H1 (Build 28000) using the Feature Enablement package KB5073122.
- General changes. This update includes a small set of improvements and fixes aimed at improving the overall stability and quality of the system for Windows Insider participants.
- Pen settings. Minor changes have been made to the digital pen settings page, including adjustments to the stylus tail button options.
- Option like the Copilot key. Added a new option allowing you to assign the pen button to launch the same application that opens when pressing the Copilot key.
- Sending feedback about the pen. You can send feedback through the Feedback Hub (Win + F) under Devices and drivers > Bluetooth — keyboards, mice, and pens.
- Reliability of continuous dictation. Improved reliability of the fluid dictation setting in voice input (Win + H).
- Developer Mode dialog. The Developer Mode dialog has been updated to match the modern visual style of Windows 11.
- Fix for sfc /scannow. Removed an unnecessary error message that could unexpectedly appear when running the sfc /scannow command.
Canary Channel users should note that builds released to this channel represent the latest platform changes at early stages of development and are not tied to any specific Windows release. Features and functionalities included in these builds may never ship in the final version, as Microsoft tries different concepts and gathers feedback. Features may change, be removed, or be replaced, and some may never become available outside the Windows Insider program. Many features in the Canary Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology. They first become available to a small group of Insiders, and then their availability expands as feedback is received and analyzed.
Installation via Windows Update: go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A computer restart is required to complete installation. To update Windows 11 Build 28000 (Canary) to Build 28020.1803, you can also download update KB5083824 and install it manually using the links above.
How the new features work:
General changes: This update applies targeted fixes in the kernel and user mode — background services are restarted, temporary component caches are flushed, and exception handlers are adjusted, improving overall stability during long Insider sessions without crashes or memory leaks.
Pen settings: The pen settings page changes the logic of the stylus tail button: the HID driver remaps the button scan code, adding support for long press and configurable timeout to invoke auxiliary menus instead of the standard single click.
Option like the Copilot key: Added ability to assign the pen button to launch the app opened by the Copilot key. The system reads the handler path from shell:AppEvents\CopilotKey registry, then uses the ITipInvocation COM object to pass the command to the target app, emulating the physical AI key behavior.
Sending feedback about the pen: To send pen feedback, use Feedback Hub (Win + F) under Devices and drivers > Bluetooth — keyboards, mice, and pens. ETW logs of the pen driver and HID reports are collected, packaged, and sent to Microsoft’s telemetry server.
Reliability of continuous dictation: Improved reliability of continuous dictation in voice input (Win + H). The algorithm now dynamically manages microphone buffer and timeouts — pauses longer than 700 ms do not terminate the session; instead it waits using RNN-based context modeling without resetting the accumulated text hypothesis.
Developer Mode dialog: The Developer Mode dialog is updated to Windows 11 modern visual style. Uses a new ContentDialog XAML container with WinUI controls instead of the old TaskDialog. Activation and focus event handling are changed; adaptive layout for different DPI scales and themes (light/dark) is added.
Fix for sfc /scannow: Removed a false error message appearing when running sfc /scannow. Previously CSI (Component Servicing Infrastructure) registry checking sometimes returned code 0x800f029a due to missing metadata — fixed by suppressing this code during system file integrity validation.
