Microsoft released cumulative update KB5089569 (26300.8553) for Windows 11, version 25H2 for Insiders on the Dev Channel (Experimental). The Experimental Channel includes the latest preview builds of Windows 11 with new features. Builds may have low stability and some issues.
- Start menu. This update includes a number of improvements for the Start menu, first described in the blog post Making Taskbar and Start more personal Insider. In particular: the Recommended section has been renamed to Recent in Start and on the settings page; section-level toggles have been added to independently show or hide Pinned, Recent, and All apps; the ability to choose between a small and large Start menu in addition to the already available Automatic (default) setting; an option to hide your name and profile picture in Start; and a completely redesigned Start menu settings page.
- Search. Substring search: files with complex names or content (e.g., MeetingNotesApril, ProjectStatusReport) are now easily found by typing April or status.
- Taskbar. Fixed several minor visual issues when using the taskbar in alternative positions. Thanks to the Insiders who shared feedback on this topic. Also, you can now use a swipe touch gesture to invoke the taskbar when using alternative taskbar positions.
Known issues:
Reset PC. Resetting your PC may hang when using Reset this PC. To complete the reset successfully, choose the cloud download option (Cloud PBR) instead of local. This issue is fixed in this update.
Installation via Windows Update: go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. A reboot is required to complete the installation. To update Windows 11, version 25H2 to build 26300.8553, you can also download update KB5089569 and install it manually using the links above.

Find and Change Settings
| Setting | Where to find | How to change |
|---|---|---|
| Start menu: Recent section rename | Settings > Personalization > Start | The Recommended section is now renamed to Recent. This change is automatic; no manual toggle is required. You can manage its visibility using the new section-level toggles on the same settings page. |
| Start menu: Section-level toggles (Pinned, Recent, All apps) | Settings > Personalization > Start | Open Settings > Personalization > Start. Use the new independent toggles to show or hide the Pinned, Recent, and All apps sections according to your preference. |
| Start menu: Small or large layout size | Settings > Personalization > Start > Layout | Go to Settings > Personalization > Start and find the Layout option. Choose either Small or Large to override the Automatic default size and apply your preferred Start menu dimensions. |
| Start menu: Hide name and profile picture | Settings > Personalization > Start | Navigate to Settings > Personalization > Start and enable the option to hide your account name and profile picture from the Start menu. Disable it to show them again. |
| Search: Substring matching for files | Start menu search or Search bar on taskbar | No setting change is required. Simply type a partial word from inside a file name or content (e.g., "April" for "MeetingNotesApril") into the search box, and the improved substring search will return matching results automatically. |
| Taskbar: Swipe gesture on alternative positions | Taskbar (when positioned left, right, or top) | When the taskbar is placed on the left, right, or top edge of the screen, use a swipe-in touch gesture from that edge to invoke the taskbar. This works automatically; no additional configuration is needed. |
| Reset PC: Cloud download workaround | Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC | If a local reset hangs, choose the "Cloud download" option instead of "Local reinstall" when prompted. This issue is resolved in the current update; installing it permanently fixes the problem. |
