Microsoft has released cumulative update KB5095025 for Windows 11 version 26H1, intended for participants of the Insider program on the Beta channel. The build updates to number 28020.2298. The patch contains a new feature to reduce eye strain during prolonged computer work, as well as an improvement in the system utility Task Scheduler.
- Screen Color Tint. A new accessibility feature has been added that overlays a selected color layer onto the entire display image, softening its intensity. The feature is designed to reduce eye fatigue and heightened sensitivity caused by bright and saturated screens by the end of the workday. The setting can be adjusted in Settings > Accessibility under the Vision section. Users can choose one of six preset colors or create a custom shade, as well as adjust the overlay intensity using a slider from light to full effect.
- Clarification of differences from Night Light. The Night Light feature makes the color temperature of the image warmer, reducing the share of blue light, which can disrupt sleep. Screen Color Tint, in contrast, reduces the overall intensity of the picture, decreasing daytime eye fatigue and light sensitivity. Both features address different needs and can be used simultaneously: Night Light adjusts warmth, while Screen Color Tint controls overall image intensity.
- Interaction with Color Filters. Enabling Screen Color Tint automatically disables active Color Filters, and vice versa. If you regularly use Color Filters, you will need to keep Screen Color Tint turned off to maintain their function.
- Task Scheduler Settings Retention. Task Scheduler now remembers user settings for column width in the task list view and restores them between sessions. Previously, column width would reset to default values each time the snap-in was closed.
At the time of build 28020.2298 release, no specific issues for this version have been recorded; however, common Beta channel bugs may occur, including File Explorer instability when using widgets and possible window animation glitches when switching between virtual desktops.
To install the update, go to Settings > Windows Update and click the Check for updates button. After downloading and applying the package, a mandatory computer restart is required. The build number after a successful update will change from Windows 11 Build 28000.1 to 28020.2298.
How the new features work:
Screen Color Tint. The desktop compositing engine applies post-processing via a pixel shader to the final frame buffer in the display output chain. The selected color tint is blended with the original image using adjustable alpha, reducing overall intensity and saturation, which lessens the load on the visual cortex during prolonged work.
Clarification of differences from Night Light. Night Light modifies the video card's gamma correction table, shifting color temperature to a warmer range by lowering blue channel amplitude. Screen Color Tint, in contrast, uses a constant-alpha overlay on the entire composited layer, uniformly attenuating brightness without altering white balance or affecting the melatonin cycle.
Interaction with Color Filters. Both functions occupy a single slot in the DirectComposition post-processing pipeline. The system tracks the mutually exclusive state via the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ColorFiltering registry key. When tinting activates, the color blindness filter is immediately unloaded from the graphics context, and vice versa, preventing shader program conflicts.
Task Scheduler Settings Retention. The taskschd.msc snap-in now serializes list view column metrics into the user profile through a binary stream under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule. During ListView element initialization, column widths are restored from the saved state, avoiding invocation of the default layout recalculation function.
